148 students were killed and several injured in an attack claimed by the terrorist group of Al-Shabaab executed in cold blood on the night ofthe 2nd of April 2015 in the Kenyan Town of Garissa, close to the Somali boarder. Two years after the attack, there are still too many empty chairs and blank hearts in the college; still too many vacant lockers and corridors missing students’ footsteps.
However, there are clear signs of hope and change. Despair and sorrow have been transformed by the vocabulary of hope and self-respect. Although students still miss their peers and cherish their pictures in their cell phones, the memories and the half spokenwords, the University has recovered the reds, yellows and purples of daily life. Normality has taken over again. A new chapter has been written by students, teachers, blackboards, notebooks, halls and corridors. The University of Garissa has remained closed for far too long. Education, culture and socialization are the best foundations against extremism. Open classrooms close the door to terrorism. This exhibition aims to show how by working, socializing and solidarity it is possible to create peace.
